Toledo rear bumper puzzle/mystery..

Good evening,

Iv been assembling the rear bumber (or at least trying to) on my Toledo. Iv purchased all the correct parts so far as i know (all part numbers i purchased from rimmers match up with the british leyland parts catalouge i have) but as you can see on the following photos something isnt right.

firstly here is the old bumper which was removed from the car (top) and the new one with brackets fitted as per manual and parts catalouge. Firstly they are completely different in regards to the old one having welded brackets on (is it even off a Toledo??) and most cruical of all the distance that the irons are away from the car. The old bumper gives about and inch and a half clearance from the valance but when i offer up the new one it hits the valance before getting close to the bolt holes

and here is the overall view showing just how different they are. the only thing i can come up with is that the coach bolts on the new one are too short and that the spacer pieces that go between them and the inside of the bumper arent long enough either, as if they were both longer then there would be more clearance between the bumper and the valance.

has this happened to anyone before or might they have any advice on alternate fixings?

any advice greatly appreciated!!

Early vs. late bumpers, I think on a Dolly they changed in 1972, so I would assume a Toledo would be similar. To fit the later bumper you need longer bumper irons and small spacers.

Howard is correct.

To further confuse the issue on Toledo's there were three types of bumper. The very early cars (first year or so of production) had the so-called "short" bumpers that do not wrap around the sides of he car.

Then the cars went to wrap around bumpers but with the welded on longer irons. Finally, the later cars have the bolt on short irons, and to add to the problem, these later bumpers sit at a completely different height on the car when fitted!

It looks as though you have purchased a later type bumper configuration and are trying to fit it to an earlier car than it was intended for. As H says, you will need a set of longer irons to achieve this.

Am I correct in thinking that some of the bumper brackets, possibly later models, are sided and if fitted wrong the bumper will be on a forward slant?
