1300 fwd - clicking front brakes & speedo cable woes

Hi folks,
Latest inspection & run in my 1300 has enabled me to establish that the doughnuts, CV joints, etc are all in very good nick & that various parts have been renewed recently. Having driven the car, we've established that the loud clicking noise seems to be coming from the front brakes. Acceleration or overrun produces the clicking, but it stops as soon as the brake pedal is pressed; anyone have any ideas on this ? The brakes themselves feel quite spongy in use and need further investigation.
Having also just spent 3 hours changing the speedo cable (the old one had sheared internally at the gearbox end), it hasn't fixed the problem. Not yet taken it all apart again, but could it be a problem with the drive from the gearbox ? Or have I not connected it correctly ?
As ever, your assistance will be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Iain
