Hi Everyone

Well, I have taken the plunge and bought a Dolly Sprint - you may have seen the yellow one on eBay painted by Mr Magoo. Well, it's that one.
I have already got a Vitesse as you can probably tell by my username and my Son drives a 1500 Spitfire so I am pretty conversant with small chassis Triumphs at least.

I'm sure I will be on here searching about and posting "help" enquiries as I go thrugh the Sprint it and get it roadworthy and My first question is "What calipers does it have? Type 16 is my guess. They are both binding big time.

Welcome to the forum Glen.

Regarding the brake calipers, the standard type look very similar to those on a Spitfire 1500 but have their hydraulic connection in a different place
so aren't interchangeable.
However, to complicate matters, it is quite possible that your car has different calipers since conversions to bigger and vented discs are common.


I suggest, the quickest way to get an answer to your question is to post a photo of your existing setup.
Whatever is fitted, the binding shouldn't be a problem to rectify .

I was watching that one on e-bay. It didn't look too bad body wise apart from the terrible re-spray, was it reasonably solid?

They are actually only £40 each now plus carriage on an exchange basis.

Hi Glen?

It's not as good as the photos suggest as was stated in the advert and I did go and see it before bidding so only have myself to blame! There is a good bit of pug in the NSR arch area, but it's solid underneath. The NS C pillar is pretty poor under the vinyl too where water had got in from the end of the gutter.

Interesting indeed - is it you that supplies them?

Back to the original question, they are type 14. I assume (and we know where that gets you) they use the same seals and pistons as the spitfire. And I am sure you have a gizmo somewhere to get the pistons out.....

On second thoughts, with your skills you may want to investigate a trackerjack conversion.

You are right of course - type 14, I took the front wheels of just now for a peak . They look far too small for the job in hand if you ask me, prey tell me more about the trackerjack conversion. However this is a budget refurb, you know me, so a seals and piston kit looks favorite- .........

Congrats on your Dolly is this the close cousin of my 1850? My reg is VGK 45W wished I had the cash available to have gone for it myself but restoring mine while enjoyable is a bit of a drain on the current cash flow.

Join the club its Soooo well worth it Aluns panels are great and you really cant go wrong with his calipers they are top drawer.

Well if it's sound underneath and the sills are good that's the main thing. Sounds like just a few cosmetic bits to deal with. Are you going for a re-spray fairly soon?

Hi Glen

It seems to be solid underneath and the sills look good but there is a lot of filler in the nearside rear arch which goes down to the sill so it's hard to tell about that part right now.

My prioirty is to get it on the road and enjoy it so here is my "to do" list so far - and it will get longer I'm sure:

Joint the club
Change No2 plug lead
Fit new seals and pistons to front brakes
Cure wayward/heavy steering
Fit new rear shocks
OS Ball joints have play
Headlights not working
Rear Indicators not working
Oil pressure guage sticking at 15psi (I hope!)
Temp guage not working
Choke panel loose
C post corrosion
1 x Halogen headlight & 3 sealed beams fitted!
Tune engine, change oil etc.
Change soggy subframe bushes

That should keep me busy for a while, the list for the Vitesse is impressive too and I don't want it to get the hump - at least that is on the road though...........

Your first point of call for heavy steering should be the universal joint on the intermediate shaft. Thats the bit of the steering column under the bonnet rather than inside.
These can partially seize and make the steering heavy and vague.

I'm not far from you in Hampton if you need any assistance or advice.

I made a jig for pushing out dolomite brake caliper pistons should you need something to get the pistons out, I am located in Staines (please don't call it staines upon Thames) you're welcolme to borrow this if it helps.
