What's the difference? Am I right in saying the 1850s hose connection is at 11 o'clock and the Sprints at 2?

Diameter and thickness? Sprint hose connection definitely at '11 o'clock' and approx diameter 20 cm and thickness between mating faces approx 10 cm.

I have access to a Sprint and my 1850 tomorrow, Sprint is 1973, 1850 is late 1975.
I'll take pictures and any measurements people suggest.

Sprint servo bigger to hide the poor braking ability

My '77 1850 has the hose outlet dead central at 12:00 o' clock. The servo thickness is 3.75 in and it is 7.25 in diameter overall.

Tony.

Looking at the dimensions and photo's of the Sprint and 1850 servos, it could be possible that they have the same volume..........impossible to tell from the photo's and measurements due to the many metal folds and so on.
Could this be a case of a Sprint offering an alternative the almost defunct 1850 servo?

1850 servo: almost defunct
Sprint servo: totally defunct
I can't see much solution there for you Bill!
I have run a Sprint with an 1850 servo, historically, without any perceptible change in braking effort, but that was normal driving without any emergencies.
I had a 'conversation' with a trader at the Triumph Show earlier this year, I think it was JCL, who had a new boxed 'Sprint Servo' on offer. I told him it wasn't a Sprint item, but likely an 1850 one. He then produced a period Girling catalogue, dated 1986, which showed just the one part number for the entire Dolomite range and told me I could use it on any model I chose to!

It was suggested on a post here recently that a MK3 escort one may be suitable, so I bought one off Ebay for £35, it does look similar but the four stud mounting plate is off set to the main diameter.
I hope to make some detailed measurements soon to compare with the sprint/1850 servo to determine if there is a way it could fit. I will list my finding here.

Looking at all the photo's of Sprint engine bays, I'm not convinced a non-Sprint servo will fit, the Sprint servo is shallower than the 1850.....

When I built the Carledo, I swapped the tiny 1300 servo for a late Sprint one (with metric studs) without problems. When that failed recently and unable to find a replacement, I have now fitted an 1850 one kindly supplied by Alun and I'm pleased to report no appreciable difference in braking performance or pedal effort, despite the fact that I drive hard. So as far as I'm concerned, no real world difference between the 2!

Interesting, I wonder how they compare to T2000 and Stag?
A proven Stag upgrade is to use a 90's BMW one (requires redrilling of bulkhead mounting holes and matching master cyl but not much else if I recall)

The internals are sufficiently different, the Sprint being almost unique. Our reconditioner is investigating adapting Stag units...

Can't quite remember what's on a Stag but the T2000 has a Lockheed master with (IIRC) a vertical stud arrangement.
