About to replace the head gasket on the 1500 SE. A little bit of advice please. To use a sealant or not? If so, what sealant is recommended and how is it best applied?
Many thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard, no sealant apart from a bead of blue Hylomar around the copper sealing washer that (or is supposed to) seals the oil transfer to the head.
Make sure that you use the Coopers gasket, black in colour and tacky to the touch. Do not use the dimpled silver-coloured one or you'll be doing the job again very soon.

Is the Coopers gasket the same as the Payen one? Recessed or not? Many thanks.

Richard

Yes.

Depends on age of the engine, in your case almost certainly recessed. Would only be non- if your engine has been changed for an early one. Look down behind the head, if you can see the tab sticking out as shown on the left below then it's confirmed recessed.
