leaking carb jet

#1 Post by Henk »

Hi SU specialists!
Planned to go next two weeks for a road trip to the south of Europe. Three British cars: a MGB, a TVR 350 and my Dolly. What could possibly go wrong? Well, before the start I have some issues. The most serious of them is a leaking carburettor jet.
The car is equipped with HS4, type FZX1265. After some bad mpg scores during the last tank of fuel I noticed the smell of fuel after a trip. Fuel was dripping from the water hose (from pump housing to radiator) on the floor. Further inspection: fuel seems to escape just from the jet, just under the 'mixture adjusting nut'. The jet has some noticable play, I can wiggle it from side to side.

Any ideas how to solve this? Any parts that I should order? My question is urgent, if a part has to come from UK to NL a couple of days are involved before it reaches me.

Order a jet and two or three sealing rubbers, don't forget the sealing rubbers! Only one needed, but they are small, easily damaged, and easily dropped.

I've no idea if this will solve your problem, but something has to be done if you want to go on this trip. Hopefully some people with expertise will be along soon.

Hi Henk, FZX1265 is listed as an 1850 carb; setup from engine number WF67919 ; so quite a late one.
Looking at the pictures it also looks like a waxstat set-up with £!!! ??? prices.
It looks like the jet to float chamber o-ring seal is not supplied separately which I find surprising  as this is the most likely failure point.
So it looks like you need 1850 waxstat jet assembly front carb; WF 67919 ---> LZX1323A £43  .

1850 waxstat jet assembly rear carb; WF 67919 ---> LZX1322A £43 :shock:

These are available at £81 / pair.
There is an overhaul kit at £128 which includes jets & float valves & gaskets as well.

Jonners will know of a cheaper way of fixing this I'm sure.

Tjakko, thanks PM returned.
Tony, I concur with the leaking point. I really doesn't seem to be the connection to the float chamber. I cleaned the jets yesterday so probably the traces of the fuel are better visible. In my opinion the leaking point is just below the adjusting nut.
I saw the high prices of a jet, but a car in flames will be more expensive. Strange thing is the late type carburettor while my car is from 1974.

Oke guys, here are the final words on this:
bought a new jet and installed it today, when removing the old one and trying the new one in, I saw that the main jet bearing had an oval hole in stead of circular. Excessive wear, although I would have thought that the jet isn't moving that much in the bearing...
Luckily I obtained a used set of HS6 from Ronald (=tahitisprint) last winter and I was able to switch the bearing. Installed the new jet as well, possibly not necessary but to be sure.

Thanks for the advises!
