Chrome trim assembly

Hi, I am in the process of refitting the rear chrome/stainless edging to the rear wings, boot and around the rear window on my 1300fwd, and I assume that all Dolomite types use the same/similar edging.
Inside my trim is some very thick black mastic type of gunge. I assume that this is some type of rust preventative of years gone by as the clips are still present.
Can someone confirm that this is so and that clips are all that is needed to hold the edging in place? Its not some sort of glue is it?
Appreciate your comments?
Pete

Pete, I've edited your first post and deleted the 2nd one so it should make sense now.

Yes Pete, the black "gunge" as you put it is the original mastic used to keep the water out, It's not there to hold it on, although I'm sure it helps.

Pete The 'gunge' is a non setting windscreen sealant. It was specified for fitting the trim to the back edge of the roof and boot on the 1300 (see the original 'Triumph' workshop manual.
It should fill the trim to keep out water and prevent the rust caused by the clips cutting the paint. The lack of this sealant is why the Dolomites
rust in this area.
For best results strip out the existing sealant refill with fresh non setting windscreen sealant. Excess is removed with white spirit. The sealant is available from bodyshop suppliers or windscreen replacement company.

Good luck

Bob
