delco dizzy electronic ignition ....
having finally put some oil in the engine, sucked the year old fuel through to the carbs, borrowed a battery and flicked the key (almost that simple, took 4 hours) the toledo TR7 engine runs. Just. Needs carbs tweeking/cleaning out, and I want to fit electronic ignition. Actually, I have it here, but as I have paid little attention to the dizzy apart from noting it appears to have been designed by an idiot (or is that just me) I cant see how to fit the magnetic collar over the shaft. As I admit, I haven't tried yet, and I may have missed something obvious, but any pointers would be handy!

What kit are you fitting? The Accuspark or similar?
You need to take the dizzy off the car, and knock the roll pin out that connects the drive dog to the shaft, pull the drive dog off, and then you can remove the shaft upwards out of the body of the dizzy. Then you can slide the magnetic collar up the shaft onto the cam lobes. Reassemble in reverse order...

Accuspark is very good converted my dolly in about an hour. It took longer to get the bolts that hold the dizzy in the block than it did to fit the unit.Tractor Boy

Yep, accuspark. So my instincts were correct! I wonder who did design it, I suspect somebody from France

You should have received some instructions with the kit, explains everything.
Henk pointed me in the right direction with the pick-up - I was trying to fit in the exact same spot as the points, don't, just use the obvious holes.
The pick-up has an angle on the mounting plate to match the dizzy plate.

Say yourself all that hassle and fit a Sprint dizzy. With a 45D4 dizzy cap, you can keep your exisiting HT leads and fit the Britpart electronic ignition kit. It was the best thing I did to my 1850. The cost of the conversion cost me just over £40 all in and was well worth every penny.

Too late....I had already got the accuspark ignition, and I hate having to re-buy! The dizzy should hopefully work OK, though the weights seem mighty slack. Not sure if replacement springs are available?
Anyway, that and fixing the passenger doorlock were too fiddly jobs ticked off the list. Must go to halfords and buy a battery, tidy the wiring and sort the carbs next. Oh, and get some blue coolant and check I don't have any water leaks. It is getting there, once happy with the engine I will sort the brakes. That should be fun! I hate the old auto adjusters. Still, not a lot of choice.

Ive done the same but the advance curve for a Sprint is a bit different. Doesnt seem to make that much difference in practice.

When I was over in Spa last weekend I was sharing a chalet with a few others. One, who has always been involved with our cars (well, Triumphs) since the early 60's was recalling his hatred for many of Spen Kings projects. I should point out another chap has recently bought a Stag, and the two of them came over together.
He was particularly scathing of teh 1850/TR7 dizzy, especially in a TR7 where he was saying the whole distributor is difficult to access. And nobody understood why they hadn't used a Lucas anyway........
Looks like I will give Robsport a call, and ask about the springs. The weights have loads of free movement, almost half the total, which will not be helpful. Still, I won't be using a timing light, setting by ear seems the only practical method on old cars.

Agree about the dizzy. My thoughts are to convert to solid state (I think that Pertronix do one) and try to forget it.
