What does " 001 Play in offside front steering rack arm " mean please ?
Is this the track-rod end ?

Track rod perhaps, rather than the end? What did MoT man say, usually work asking for details

I'd say it's play in the end of the rack, if it was the track rod end it would say "Play in offside front Track Rod End"

Bits to repair were available form Fitchetts.
More likely to be an uneducated tester looking for play with the wheels dangling.
In which case ignore it.

I had this same thing play on the steering rack inner joints advised on last years MOT. He said he was required to put it down but it wasn't a problem because it was only present when the wheels were off the ground. When the cars back on the ground there's no longer any play. This guy was very classic friendly letting me fix things during the test like the exhaust hanger and mixture, and letting me off a split on the back of a ball joint gator l couldn't see on the promise that I fix it ASAP. I just couldn't see the point of the advisory if it was not potentially dangerous in the future.
This years test with a different classic friendly tester it didn't come up and it passed with no advisories. It seems to me it just boils down to each individual tester. First one was in his late 20s second in his sixties.

Thanks All, Yes you are quite correct. It is the steering rack joint inside the rack bellows. Its not a lot of play but is just there. I've had a look at the parts book and it looks like the rack has to come off, the bellows removed and the swivelling joint has the be dismantled. Do you remove the shims to adjust the end float like the MGB front wheel bearings ?

Many years ago I changed the offside joint, while still on the car.
So the rack doesn't have to come off!...

Pretty much...
You can get a new ball joint cup as well from Fitchetts.
You did well doing that in situ. Its a pretty hefty spanner needed to get at the retaining nut under the bellows.
