A lazy question, the parts book is in the garage not that I'm sure it would tell me......
What's the oil transfer 'housing' for, why's it there and what does it do? (transfer oil presumably, but from where to where?).

Hi I presume you refer to the circular housing with a central bolt.
This allows oil from the pump to be fed into the standard filter, however if there is no room for a standard filter a remote filter can be used by using this mounting point and of course an oil cooler and pressure gauge too.
