Water pump bung O rings size !

#1 Post by tony g »

Hi I bought a club water pump bung to use with an electric pump. On fitting the O rings have shaved going in and a leak subsequently even though they were lubed, so now I need to know the O ring size so I can get some more asap. Any help appreciated.

Cheers

The club have replacements Tony. I would look at the mating surfaces to make sure they are clean. I always use a bit of grease when replacing the pumps.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years. :boggle2: ... Still Sprintless.

Engines, Gearboxes, Overdrives etc. rebuilt. PM me.

The surfaces are good Mart and the o rings covered in Vaseline. Tight going in IMO. If I can get the sizes I may be able to get some local. Im suspecting the o rings are too thick on the ones I had hence the need for the usual size. Put me back a bit now so need to get moving quickly if I can before I lose the love :)

Not that many on here use the ewp and bung.
so I cant say I'm that surprised.

Numbers using the forum also seem to be in decline...so spread the word...

Yes I have noticed the speed of the forum has slowed. FB maybe?
I hoped we could have come up with the o ring sizes from the whoever makes and specs the bung really, but as time was against me I didn't want to wait for replacements from the club to arrive so I made some. Has worked out ok in the end.

Sorry to hear it's been a challenge for you Tony, some blocks are tight, I always trial fit the bung with no O rings, then if appears too tight I get out the wet and dry or hone the block, I don't know why but some blocks are very tight.

As for O rings, the spec was per the original water pump, any supplier should do. We've not made any for a while as the original supplier is no longer with us and lots of Stag places do alloy ones now. That said, a few race/track cars use the club bung. I can't remember seeing a race car using a standard pump.

Yes Ben, its one of many challenges Ive had to get over. I was just frustrated by it all really.
The bung with no o rings on went into the block no problem, I did that first. With the 2 o rings on and covered in Vaseline it took quite a bit of force to pop in. On removal as said before the o rings were shaved hence my request for the correct sizes.

After that I had some o rings in a Unipart bottom end set so I put those on thinking the logic would be the o rings would be the same as stock pump. These felt really loose and a pressure test showed them to be not what I needed.

Eventually I used some trial and error fitting and came up with a pair that fitted nice and no leaks so far :)
Although a lovely looking piece I feel maybe a little note in there with fitting tips could be of help to others and the tapped hole should maybe be M10 now as I struggled to find a bolt to fit it. My UNF /UNC stash is only from this car and any bits Ive bought. Just a thought.

Cheers

Hi Tony...I'll be fitting an electric pump any time soon, could you post some pics of the installation please? Have you used the std rad?

yes I'll post pics when I compile it all. I looked at Mad Marts pics of his and I ended up in the same place as him. Im using a fiesta rad and a Mini One expansion bottle placed behind the strut tower on the drivers side against the bulkhead. Seems ok so far :)

Basically a nearly straight bottom hose to pump the a short 90 degree from pump to water housing. Ive angled the pump so it can move a bit without hitting the block or chassis. The ewp 80 is not recommended to be fixed with a bracket.

Very sexy Tony! Is it a Davis Craig one and have you plumbed it as you would a standard system?
