Its likely to be a connection/earth problem as you suspect. Another place to check is the connection blocks/multi plugs at the bottom of the steering column area inside the car. Anywhere there is a black wire is worth double checking ie n/s inner wing turret for the spider earth there and of course the battery earth.

There are really only two possibilities here:
1. An earth problem, as you have already intimated, and these can be problematic to find, but a multimeter used to determine the resistance of the earth path should be able to help you here, you should see readings of fractions of an ohm for a good earth, much less than 1 ohm (0.5 or less) tells you that everything is fine. Put one probe of your meter on the earth connection of your rev counter and the other on the negative post of the battery, you should see a reading of 0.5 ohm or less, anything higher and you have a problem.
Do check your meter before you start, put the two probes together and check your reading, this is effectively your zero to use for any further readings.
2. A 12V feed problem, which may be caused by a high resistance in the fuse box; this is worth a check as the fuses are in a pretty vulnerable position for corrosion to set in. Try cleaning up the fuse holders within the fuse box with a bit of emery paper, clean it up with some petrol and finally apply some vaseline; hopefully, everything will then be fine.
Good luck and don't give up!

Its always the fuse box in 99 out of 100 cases like this.

Clean both terminals on both fuses with a spray of WD40 and a fine brass toothbrush.
Works wonders...
