Illuminated switch

I have just recently bought a 1972 1500 FWD. I have just discovered a switch that was mounted in the parcel shelf between the steering column and the central heater deflector control that is above the gear stick. The switch is the type that is pulled in and out, with a bulb mounted within the knob itself. I only discovered it when I removed the parcel shelf to replace the clutch slave cylinder. I found the body of the switch hanging down behind the shelf and later found the knob in the glove box minus the bulb. What is it for?

Heated rear window, which after over 40 years may not be functioning, hence the disconnetcted switch?

Thanks for the information. I live in Sutton Coldfield, I am already a member of the TSSC which meets at the Boars Head Gt Barr. This club is great for my Spitfire Mk IV but not so good for my new 1500 FWD. Does the Triumph Dolomite Club have meetings close to Sutton Coldfield in the West midlands?
