Temporary Insurance - Beware

Having just sold the 1500HL I cancelled its insurance policy this afternoon, and was a bit aggrieved (being polite here) to be told there was no refund.
That policy cost me £100 for a year, the broker (well known classic insurer) knew I intended to keep the car for a short time, and offered me the £100 for a year KNOWING the car was for sale. They didn't tell me about no refund, "we only explain that if asked".
If that had been explained, of course I would have shopped around.
This is the second time they've annoyed me since renewing the policy on my 1850, and all the time it's an 0844 number.
I will not be renewing with them, I'll try Peter James next time they were very helpful when I was collecting quotes, and would have got my business if the existing insurer hadn't offered to price match and give free agreed value.
Anyone wanting to find out who they are, just drop me a PM.

In my professional opinion, if you were to take this to the Financial Ombudsman Service, I think you'd have a good case for the policy having been mis-sold. And it costs nothing to go to the FOS.

They'll ask "Did you read the T&C's?" to which you'll answer "No". Case closed. One to put down to experience.

I agree, but given all the information I gave them about why I wanted insurance.......

Simply put, they will never have my business again, and I will actively discourage others from using them.
It works out their losses will be more than my £100.

Hmmm.......

Perhaps, but it depends on whether the Terms and Conditions were actually legal, or more crucially for Bill, legal in Scotland.
The bit about being bound by the "Laws of England and Wales" is irrelevant to residents of other parts of the UK, the contract is governed by the laws
of the buyer's country.
In practical terms you have no chance against the insurance companies....
not even the late Jimmy Reid, in his role as a documentary maker for the BBC, could find a hint of integrity there.

I wouldn't expect the FOS to allow them to hide behind the T&Cs if they sold you a policy that was clearly inappropriate for the circumstances you'd told them about. And you needn't worry about proving that you told them - the FOS will assess things on the balance of probability and, in general, will take the customer's word for it unless the business can prove otherwise.

You can read more about it here: http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk

It is worth a letter, because the FOS will ask questions of them, and that will be when they start having to earn the £100.

I don't suppose you had the policy for less than the 14 day cooling off period?

No, it was more than 14 days, they took great care to point this out.
I've calmed down a bit, and as suggested will put this down to experience.
I'm just glad this forum exists for others to learn from my mistakes.

I've removed the name of that insuruer. We can't name those who have allegedly given us bad service without all the facts to hand.

if the one in thinking of, ive always let my policy run to the end,not bothered about the refund as it minimal, i can understand it if the policy was a £1000 but £100 pound a year for car insurance, that half what im paying, there are other robbers(insurers) you can choose from that will give you the same but high cost and more agro....... if its the 0844 insurers, ive been with them for many years(10yrs+) two triumphs, cortina mk2 and e30 bmw`s but triumph are still the best cars
