Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Today I started checking the body for rust. A couple of pics of the usual spots. Bottom of the A posts and under the the windscreen. Also got the rear bumper off and the passanger side rear wing is going to need repairing at the bottom and the bumper mount. The drivers door was also twisted so didn't fit correctly so straightened it and adjusted hinges. Adjusted curve of bootlid as didn't match the body shape too well. Still need to sort out rear passanger door as it's not a good fit.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
New cills ordered today. Got all 3 panels for both sides coming. Time to start cutting and welding when they turn up to start bringing the dolomite black to life. Brilliant service by the tdc parts service.

Well worth the membership fee just to have access to the superb parts service in my opinion!
Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Today I took the plunge and got the grinder out! Starting on the passanger side as that's the worse one. Cut the outer cill off to see what's left inside and its amazing how many patches were just put on top of each other and that someone thought that was a decent repair! If it was done properly in the first place it wouldn't of got this bad! Now I just need to wait for the new panels to turn up so I can cut even more out then start rebuilding it.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Cut the lower part of the cill off and cleaned up the underneath. Behind all the dirt and surface rust the floor is solid so far and should clean up nicely. Removed lower part of front wing to gain access to rusty parts. Tided up outer cill cut and removed cill reinforcer but left top part to weld new panel to. Need to replace seat belt captive nut before cill goes on and rear part of inner cill and both jacking points need to be repaired. A coat of rust treatment to protect what's been revealed.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
There was a bit more cutting today as the suspension mount had a few holes so cut out the rotten part ready to rebuild. Got the rear part of the inner cill welded aswell. It's slowly starring to go back together.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Got the inner cill fitted and welded in place then ran out of gas for the welder. Did the first rough cut on the cill reinforcer which just needs a little adjustment to make it fit properly. The passanger rear door wouldn't shut properly due to worn hinges so swapped them with the ones on the other car.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Today I got the cill reinforcer trimmed to size. Front and rear jacking point reinforcers in. Seam sealed and painted with weld through primer. Cill reinforcer fully welded in, tided up and primered.

Re: new member mx5 1.6 conversion.
Today I sorted the top of the cill on the rear passanger side. Found filler and old patches. Used part of the other shell as a repair panel. All rust gone and solid once again. Started to adjust the outer cill so it fits properly aswell.
