Hi, Could anyone tell me how many Broadspeed Dolomite Sprints were built specifically as race- cars?

Also, how many might have survived?

From this book, I found the following information regarding the Broadspeed racing Sprints:




Broadspeed was (financially) backed by BL for the Dolomite Sprint racing program for the 1974 - 1978 racing seasons. For every season, 2 racing cars were available:


1974:


- The 1974 cars were black with silver stripes
- The cars were sold off at the end of the season, probably to a Scandinavian dealer
- An additional Dolomite Sprint was prepared for the 1974 Avon Tour-of-Britain event, registered OVC 304M. The same car was later prepared and entered for the 1974 Spa 24 hour race




1975:


- The 1975 cars were silver with black stripes
- These cars again were sold at the end of the season
- An additional Dolomite Sprint was prepared for the Trophée de l’Avenir race at Silverstone. This car was much more modified than the regular race cars (maybe Gr.2 instead of Gr.1?) and reputedly had 235bhp with wide wheel arch extensions, etc



1976 - 1978:


- From this season on, the cars were the familiar white with the red & blue Leyland livery
- Usually 2 identical race cars were available per event. The race car and the T-car were used unsystematically one or another
- For the 1978 seaon, the black Hermetite car was also prepared by Broadspeed alongside the 2 regular Dolomite Sprint racing cars


- At the end of the 1978 season, both racing cars were sold to Gerry Marshall racing who entered the cars in 1979 in the well-known Triplex/Motor/Esso livery (see video)


No registered details about the cars exist, but I reckon about a dozen Broadspeed Dolomites Sprint were built in total.

Hi TahitiSPRINT, Thank-you for the info. I must buy that book. Rather amazing only 12. However you are probably correct, as I can remember when very young seeing a Broadspeed Mini

in a car-yard, red with the fastback, and I think there were only around 38 of them built, and are now very, very valuable. I know that one of the 1974 Dolomites went to Australia and finished 10th overall at Bathurst in 1975,

Philip Larmour of Sprintparts owns this car. He used to post quite a lot on here but haven't seen anything for a while.

The following is a copy of a post from the archives in 2006. This from Mark Larmour:

" To the best of our knowledge there was 2 Broadspeed built Sprints brought to Australia.

Philips car was brought into Australia by Ron Hodgson Leyland, raced by and then owned by Bob Morris, then sold to Alexandra Surplice and then bought by Philip in 1981.

Hodgson painted the car yellow to match the locally sold cars then they were repainted white (Leyland colour scheme) for 1976/7 season?

The other Broadspeed car was owned by Jim Laing-Peach (and I believe that this car won its class in the 1974 BTCC) and is still in storage in country NSW to the best of my knowledge."

One came up in the UK recently (last year?) painted in the black-with-silver-stripe 74 livery and with a Gerry Marshall "signed" cam box. I can't remember how much, but it was a SHEDLOAD of money!

wow, that certainly looks different to the race sprints ive seen, might have found a new colour scheme for my 1500tc
