Solid rack mounts?

I am working on a Toledo for another forum member and need a set of solid mounts for the rack. I seem to be searching for the holy grail!
When I built the Carledo, I got a set from Fitchetts but they no longer do them for the Dolly range due to unavailability of the longer U bolts needed. All other suppliers i've contacted so far also only supply kits for the short bolt app, can anyone help?

Bizarre, but just stumbled across jigsaws site who claim to have them. Or did, think their site is a bit last year (or probably more)

I had the jigsaw solid rack mounts and whilst the nearside one is ok, it's impossible to fit the offside with the engine in....I'll send you a drg of the mounts I have made that mean you can fit the mounts without having to take the engine out!

Additionally, the jigsaw mounts do not stop the rack from rotating or locate the rack on the subframe axially.....mine do.

Thus is what my offside one looks like...

Once you've nailed the offside down you could use 1 jigsaw mount or 1 std with a poly bush?

Send me your email address Steve and I'll pop the drg over!

No, they are wrongly advertised, the U bolt is not long enough by a far margin.

However, if you can source the long U bolts then the cheap herald etc mount should be ideal.

The Jigsaw mounts are just the same as the the ones I already have on the Carledo, basically generic Herald etc but with longer U bolts and these seem to be the sticking point. True, these do not automatically locate the rack exactly and you have to lift the engine a bit to fit them, but I managed before and will do it again, I don't see much point in buying a Jigsaw kit and then only using half of it and the originals are out too since the owner has mostly stripped the threads on them in an attempt to remove the slop! The real problem with the car is considerable play in the inner track control arm bushes, which, being a Toledo, are not rose jointed, so some superflex are going in there! With new inner bushes, solid mounts and the tracking set correctly (at the moment its averaging 1.5 degrees of toe in) I reckon the steering will sharpen up no end!

Shaun, I'm interested in the drawing anyway, just click the e-mail box under my signature!

Steve,

I have a set of the Jigsaw ones. I'm reassembling my rack at the moment so keep an eye on my restoration thread and I'll mount the rack in the subframe so people can see what they look like.

The jigsaw ones rely on pure clamp load to stop the rack from moving: that means only the clamp load will stop the rack from rotating along its axis and moving from side to side.

I had these fitted and when I came to remove the pinion side, no amount of jacking up of the engine would raise it sufficiently to get the u bolt out so I had to cut it off. My design (a copy of an old sprintspares one actually) doesn't require the engine to be lifted as they are bolted from underneath, they locate the rack axially and they stop the rack from twisting.

I must admit Shaun, I do like your mounting a lot and I can see the advantages, but I'm also under the cosh for time, If you could knock me one up in time to get it for the weekend i'd be very interested! Then a second one to follow later and I could split the Jigsaw kit between 2 cars! Money available of course!
This car only has an OHV engine so is much easier to lift and can travel much further up than a Sprint one so i'm not anticipating too much trouble fitting the jigsaw mounts if you can't help in time.

Cheers, Steve
