Hi all. I am about to change front and rear windscreen rubbers, the rubbers are already fitted to the glass. My question is, can I put some Vaseline or such like on the rubbers to aid installation in framework, Regards, Myles.

Yes you can, but if you have some clear waxoil this will work to seal it too

Personally I would use red rubber grease as it won't damage the rubber.

We had this discussion not so long ago and the general consensus was to use sealant when fitting the glass because this is what the workshop manuals recommended. I fitted my windscreen without any sealant and I must've got lucky because it has remained leak free ever since. I bought my trim strip from Rarebits (you Herald owners and Club Triumph members will know Bill Davies who owns Rarebits). Mark, will the rubber grease help to seal the screen? It sounds like a good idea if it does.

Vaseline will act as a solvent to the rubber and must be avoided. Also avoid washing up liquid due to high salt content.

When I did my rear screen recently I fitted it initially without any sealant as I didn't want to risk getting it on the headlining. I then used one of these caulking guns with a fine nozzle to inject sealant from the outside under both lips. I then refitted the plastic chrome trim.
