Running issues!

So I've had the dolomite on the road for a while and it's been amazing to drive.

But picture this...
A cold morning on the way to college, choke on and turn over....click....
This sound was the starter trying to turn but not. So a fiddle with the wire (not very scientific :) )
And success, she goes albeit a bit "chuggy" but I put that down to the cold.

Pull up at my friend's house, he gets in, and off we go! For about 3 seconds. :/
Cue a big push into a parking space.

First think to check was points, and one face had snapped and burnt.

Cue a replacement of the points and a VERY chuggy drive home(not far).

Engine struggled and sounded like a tractor, needed a extra push to get it up the small hill at the start of My drive.

Plugs out, and they were very carbon-y, so clean and back in.
running to rich? Timing done and redone and it's made no difference, the engine will not run at low revs.

Help! What do I do next?

Thank you!
Dalton

You could do with that Britpart electronic ignition kit. No more points to worry about (best to keep a set handy should it ever fail). Once you've sorted out the ignition side you can move on to the carb. It sounds like it is running a bit rich so try weakening the mixture a flat or 2 anticlockwise (looking down from above). An alternative method would be to screw the mixture nut all the way to the top and then back down 12 flats and that should give you a good starting point for the mixture. Count yourself lucky you only have ONE carb to contend with! If you have access to a Colortune plug or an exhaust gas analyser, you can set the mixture exactly.

Glad you're enjoying the car. I'm able to enjoy and improve mine now it is back on the road (my "resto" thread has made a return to the members-only section). By the way, happy belated 18th birthday. I saw it on the forum the other day. You are officially an adult now!

If the points were burnt blue, the condenser is duff! the new points will last a few miles if you're lucky but change the condenser soonest!

Thank you for the birthday wishes!

I've got a Brit part set, and tried to install in earlier. Can't get it to spark at all with that installed, I've followed the instructions, is there a way I can check the unit that anyone knows of?

On the condenser front, I forgot to mention that I swapped that too as a precaution.

Thanks for your replies, another afternoon spent tinkering should get me there!

The leads from the Britpart kit connect to the coil. I'll take a look at mine when I get home from work. Get it running on your new points and condenser before trying the Britpart kit again. Also, beware of poor quality ignition parts. It is worth paying that bit more for decent quality parts..
