I noted a comment on another post that there are Sprint gearbox layshafts around that haven't been properly hardened. Apparently you can test this with a file. So how do you do this without damaging the running surfaces on the shaft please ?
If the layshaft is not hardened then how do you get it hardened please ? I assume this is something to do with heating it up and quenching it in oil ?

Though the layshaft is hardened (or should be) all along it's length, only the area around the bearings actually does any work (ie about 2" at each end) so you can test it with a file in the middle with relative impunity.

Usually a shaft is heat treated before final machining due the heat treatment causing distortion, this rules out hardening a finished shaft, the only exception I know of to this would be Nitriding but this can only be done to certain metals such as EN40,EN24 steels and Titanium
