bit of a leak

Seem to have a drip of oil when stinking hot, I've narrowed it down to around the oil filter housing where it joins the block. Now being in a tight fitting kit car, its eye on the end of finger time. If I strip this out will anything come springing out as a surprise? the old ball on a spring pinging across the garage while I'm looking at the oil dripping down my sleeve trick, or am I safe to remove and see whats failed, gasket? O ring? any help as always appreciated. Took the old sprint kit car to Germany in the autumn never missed a beat, could have sold it several times, gained a few friends but I've gained this smallest of oil leaks which annoys me some what.

Are you running the original setup or do you have a spin-on conversion? I can put up a page from the parts catalogue if it would help.

Oh, awkward question ! I presume I have the original set up. Long bolt up the middle of filter, the leak appears to be where the filter holder joins the block, not the filter housing itself. Someone down here reckons its a large O ring behind, but they are no expert.

No need to worry about anything flying out. Just undo the 9/16 bolt and remove the filter housing to inspect. There is a large squared off o ring in a recess in the block this is more likely the cause of the leak. Make sure there is only one seal in the block because some have more than one stuffed in .

As Ron states nothing should ping out and fly across the garage floor but put a oil catchpan or something to collect the oil whilst undoing / removing the filter bowl oh and roll your sleeve up as you may end up with a oily arm.

Have a look at teh attached shortcut.

Many thanks all, Will give it a go today. Looks like the cost of this O ring is not going to need robbing of the housekeeping. Great to know people who know, how did we manage before the big wide world of the web??

Its not really an O ring, but a large square section band. They come in a box with the new oil
filter. The old ones can be a git to get out. I usually stick a needle in at an angle and then pull it outwards.

Make sure the new one is fitted properly in the groove. Churn on starter til oil light goes out and check for a seal to avoid disasters.

Then you could look at the O ring on the oil transfer housing next if it still leaks a bit. The ally bit with
the oil pressure warning light switch.

Don't forget to give the new seal a smear of clean engine oil before fitting. It makes it easier to fit and avoids leaks.
