Camcorder
Can anyone recommend a budget (£50ish) camcorder capable of 1080p. My Sony Handycam developed a fault and will cost £80+ to fix. I only use it for track days.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years.
... Still Sprintless.

Re: Camcorder
If it's for track days, is a dash cam any use? I like my Transcend DP200.

Re: Camcorder
Mart, check out YouTube. There's a bloke from Manchester who goes under "Techmoan" and he's reviewed various video cameras. It might be worth checking out his reviews. Depending upon where you mount it, your smartphone might be up to the job. Mine is a Nokia Lumia 830 which does 1080 at 30fps. My recent YouTube vids were filmed with this phone so take a look. Other phones to consider are the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Sony Xperia Z which record in 1080 at 30fps both of which run Andorid (my Nokia is rinning Windows Phone). Newer models will do higher quality video but I've found 1080 at 30fps to be half decent.

Techmoan is a great channel, I'm a regular subscriber!
I bought the SJCAM SJ5000+, partly because it came with a fully waterproof case so that I could use it on my boat and motorbike, and it's been pretty faultless. Downside is the price is a bit higher than you asked for, not Gopro high, it was £100 all in including lots of mounting brackets.

Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)
Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

Re: Camcorder
I have come across this chap before, when I was looking for a dash cam.
I was actually looking at these:-
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191754186926? ... EBIDX%3AIT
Probably a knock-off but I thought for the money...
Then there is this...

your thoughts?

Re: Camcorder
Definitely a knock off Mart, the real SJ4000 will have SJCAM logo on them.

Throwaway cheap though, but probably at that price due to poor battery and a low end CMOS sensor that will struggle with light level changes, which will be an issue when you're moving along.
In theory all these cameras on the published specs alone look like they will do the job for you, but personally if can't get to see an example of a recording on Youtube (eg) then I would personally steer clear.

Re: Camcorder
My little VCam dashcam takes perfectly adequate film. I've not uploaded anything anywhere yet from it but i've got all last years CC footage on the computer and it looks good on my 19" monitor. Dunno if its 1080p or what, it doesn't say and i've lost the instructions!
My only complaint is it chops the footage into 122 second segments. Cost about £17 on the bay, Christmas before last. And I had to buy a much bigger SD card for it which was another £5 IIRC.
That video camera looks bang on, does everything my JVC does but mine cost £140! A bit overkill for trackdays but at that price.......
Steve
My VCam also came with a multi adjustable screen mount and a lead to plug into a fag lighter socket so battery life is not an issue.
Edit, Data on the computer says its 1920x1080 and 24fps if that helps.

According to The Oxford English Dictionary, Samsung SGH G600 means:Mad Mart wrote:Er! Smartphone??? I've got a Samsung SGH G600. You can make and receive telephone calls on it. I'll check out the reviews.
Belonging to the very distant past and no longer in existence
Having been in existence for a very long time
Showing or feeling signs of age or wear

Now guess the word that rendered those definitions.

Smartphone as a dashcam. Great idea, I'll try that this weekend.

Ancient it is.
At least I have a smartphone, I'm just too dumb to know how to use it.
Looking forward to using it as a dashcam, I have a decent size, fast sim card in it too.
