1500 Auto, Whining

My 1500 auto has developed a whine in recent weeks but cannot pinpoint it at all, Whilst using it today it sounded louder not deafening but different. I have eliminated wheel bearings as a. Just passed mot and b. noise doesn't lessen depending on steering load. Gearbox changes up and down no problem and there is no problem with drive and no wierd noises when pulling of, engaging reverse etc. Is there a way to say test the prop bearing just for a starting point? Noise sounds further forward than this but got to start trying to find it as definitely worsening. Think I mentioned in one of my very 1st questions when I first got my car last April, that the previous owner / owners had used Dexron fluid as there are 3 receipts for it over a 2 year period in service history. But I have changed the fluid 3 times now and done 2,500 miles since owning it and gearbox is sweet, kickdown perfect, really hoping that it's not a gearbox whine! Any pointers gratefully received!

A little more data would help. Is the noise rev related or road speed related? Is it still there when you rev the engine in neutral or park? These answers will help us narrow it down!

Steve, noise not there in Neutral or park when revved, Sounds central but hard to pinpoint, lower speeds not as audible but round 30-50 at it's worse seems to fade slightly at speeds over that, no grit in the noise at all just a constant whine.

Raise the back end of the car and make sure the front wheels are chocked. Start the car, put the transmission into D and listen to the diff. I was able to diagnose a whining diff on my Dolly 1300 using this method. Make sure that the car is secure before venturing underneath it!
