Has anybody had any experience of Yorkshire Triumphs?

I think that my engine needs to come out and the head off. There are some local classic car garages but I would rather use a Triumph specialist.

I would be grateful of any comments on Yorkshire Triumphs or come to that any other Triumph mechanics not too far from Nottingham.

You could pm Carledo (Steve) as he's not too far from Nottingham in the grand scheme of things, or ToledeMan (Dave) whose the West Yorkshire area organiser so will more than likely have some sound advice.

I've never used Yorkshire Triumphs so can't comment either way.

They did me some machining on an 1850 head several years ago,and are quite close to you.

Peter Burgess is well respected in MG circles and is old school. If Carledo was an option distance wise I'd take mine to him (if I didnt do it myself)

I've never used Yorkshire Triumphs so I'm unable to help. If this thread had been posted a week earlier I could've asked my TSSC friends (the local meeting was this Tuesday). The only advice I can offer is to find a local classic friendly garage. The garage round the corner from me is classic friendly and is so close that I can keep an eye on proceedings which was handy when they had my 1850 in last year for the work I had done. There's also a testing station next door but one that is also classic friendy.

I'd like to know about Yorkshire Triumphs too.
They are literally minutes from my house and it would be handy to have a trusted local specialist.

I am (hopefully) going to see them on Thursday.

They were very helpful on the phone.

Peter Burgess could not do anything until the end of July.

Been to Yorkshire Triumphs today and was totally impressed.

They identified various problems the main one being the jackshaft.

They were very knowledgeable and the Stags that they had worked on looked just amazing BUT!!!!

They seemed to think that the engine may well need reconditioning and this could cost up to £4000.00.

I swallowed hard and tried not to look shocked.

I am sure that they will do an excellent job but if it does cost that much then the P6 that I have been drooling over will definitely go out of the window. (I need some bodywork doing as well).

Any thoughts.

4 grand should buy you a rolls royce quality piston weighed tuftrided balanced crank new cam head pressure tested and gas flowed....on a Sprint.

What on earth are they going to do to yours?

£4,000 could easily be spent on an engine.
Head work - £300. Plus labour for removing, labour for refitting, gaskets, etc etc etc and that's JUST THE HEAD. And that's considered cheap by some. Labour at £40 (minimum, a guess) per hour plus vat mounts up, it's expertise and knowledge you pay for.
Jackshafts, cams, pistons, rebores, crank grinds, water pumps...........
Or you can do it yourself with help...
Or get another engine.....

I spent £5k on the Quicksprint engine, but that had a lot done to it; machining costs alone were £600 and I added such things as new pistons, new liners, vernier pulley and ARP studs....

However, I read "They seemed to think that the engine may well need reconditioning..." as a bit of a nebulous statement. I'd ask what symptoms makes them think this, and what is included in their estimate?

You don't want to go offering them a blank cheque like that no matter how impressive they appear.

Their reason for saying that the engine may need a full recon. was mainly the mileage. They seem think that the life of these engines is such that 65000 miles would warrant a strip down. There may also be an issue with the flex plate.

I do have a donor car with, what seems a good engine but it is not automatic. On top of that I really do not have the facilities (or perhaps he will) to swap or strip down engines.

I would get more quotes for the work you want done, even a day on the phone listing works required could
save a lot of money, even if you need to transport the vehicle across the country.

Strongly recommend you get a set price for any work, I've been in the same situation and know
(£8.5k later), on a vehicle usually one item leads to another.

There are a good few forum members whose knowledge far exceeds that of any garage, a few pm's
may help in verifying diagnosis or some form of assistance or recommendation.
