No, there's nothing really ominous about it, just my stupidity, really.
About 2 years ago I decided to replace a noisy timing chain. So, naively, I bought a kit.....which included a Rolon tensioner.
After about 2 or 300kms the tensioner failed, see the "Rolon is definitely Rubbish" thread I started, and I replaced it with a Jaguar item I'd bought from Barratts.
Recently, (Easter) I aborted a big trip to Victoria, that my wife and I had started out on, because the car developed a strange noise. Initially I figured it was a sad bearing in the viscous fan, so I bought and installed a new electric item....which now works well, but didnt stop the noise.
Then, I homed in on the noise and it seemed to be coming from around the water pump, but a friend with an electric stethoscope said its definitely from inside the timing case and around the upper timing chain guide. Today we pulled it all apart and found that the pad on the upper guide was pretty well demolished by the roughness of the outside of the chain, which was caused by the tensioner going metal to metal with it.
Today, I replaced the whole thing with another Robsport kit, (including a new Jag tensioner) and the noise is gone. But to answer your question, I used a Rolon chain, because it was all I could find. I hope there aren't issues with them as well.
Cheers,
Rob
