Anyone know where GAW792N is?

#1 Post by Pippin »

A relative of mine is enquiring on the FB group about the whereabouts of this 1500TC. It was white (at least at one time), was supposedly restored a few years ago and went to Scotland, but hasn't been MOT'd since May 2010 and the tax expired in April 2011.

:bluewave:
Hi there, I was the person who bought GAW 792N back in 2005 and drove it home to the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles of Scotland. At the time, it was Ice Blue in colour with a Shadow Blue interior which I think was an excellent colour combination. During my ownership, I repainted the interior and tidied up a few bits and pieces. I enjoyed my (too) short ownership with it, it was reliable and used daily until the onset of winter meant salt on the roads so it was laid up till the following spring.
Just over a year later, I bought a Mk IV Spitfire from Trowbridge in Wiltshire. On arriving home, I was made an offer I couldnt refuse for GAW 792N by a local lad. He sold it locally about 2009 and it then had an engine rebuild and disappeared. Although it smoked a little on initial start-up during my ownership, this soon cleared and I believed a set of valve stem seals would have sufficed. The engine rebuild took a long time to complete and I was afraid it might have been abandoned and tried unsuccessfully to locate it.
In the last week, I've found that it is now in Leverburgh, a small village at the south end of the Isle of Harris (think Harris Tweed) and hope to go down to see it, that's roughly 75 miles from where I stay. According to this recent sighting, it is again white, however I shall confirm this when I see it.
So I'm glad to report it is still around, I have a soft spot for it as it re-introduced me to classic motoring.
I still have the Spitfire, and also a 1977 1500HL which I bought from Bill Marshall in Edinburgh last year.

:(
Well, today I saw what can only be described as a restoration project which I assume used to be GAW 792N - it's been lying in the corner of a community workshop for the last couple of years, partly stripped in no apparent order as far as I can see.
It's no longer Ice Blue, it has a very rough coat of dirty white paint, though at first glance it appears relatively solid. Both offside doors are off as is the windscreen; the dash and interior have been removed though the headlining is in place but torn in places; to confuse matters, an 1850 engine, driveshaft, rear axle & trailing arms, doors, dash & other bits are mixed in with the 1500 stuff!
The workshop want shot of it, it arrived there in its present condition according to them so I'm going to try and contact the person who transported it there, then I can have a proper look at it and suss out its condition as I couldnt access the nearside which was against the wall!
Such a shame to see a car that was in good condition when I bought it and now it looks like a heap of scrap!
I shall update this as and when I find out any more. I didnt take any photos because of the amount of rubbish lying around it, they wouldnt have been of much use - one consolation, at least I know where it is.

Today I went back for another look at GAW792N, having finally got a hold of the guy who currently owns it. He did intend to restore it but hasn't managed to get started so I've agreed to take it off his hands for a price, including the 1850 bits 'n pieces. It is currently standing on 3 wheels so I've asked for that suspension to be refitted so that it is at the very least a "rolling shell"
I'll put up some photos once I get word to take it out of the workshop and trailer it somewhere closer to me.

Hi, im new to the site but have joined as i used to own GAW792N, gawn. Bought the car for £250 in about 1980 and owned it for over 20 years. Most of that time it was sat in garages at the houses i moved too. Glad the car is still alive it was my first car and i suppose its due to me that it still survives. Had some great times with it and under it! Second gear syncro not up to quick changes so it had had about 5 gearboxes and one engine rebuild in the time i had it on the road.
Would love to see it back on the road.

I hope it can be taken on by somebody else, the 1850 engine is from a local very low mileage car, probably only in the 30k miles
