RMR: A Sprint dilemma

This is the car I rescued last week; it has not been on the road since 1985, ie three years before I bought my first Sprint! There are in places some horrendous rot, but in others it is surprisingly solid. I have cleaned up the interior a little, to good effect, washed it and explored its weaknesses.

Evidently, it was taken off the road due to waterpump issues, the inlet manifold has been taken off and the pump exposed, but then the owner apparently died. Everything was left to two brothers, whom I'm told didn't speak, so nothing was done with the property until one of them died. In the intervening years, the wheels and instruments were stolen, and latterly the roof of the garage collapsed.

The underside is covered with surface rust, which will have thinned the metal a little, but it seems generally solid; I managed to poke two small holes in the offside chassis leg and the boot floor has gone beneath the tank.

The eyebrows and upper front valance seem good, and you can see the front closure of the nearside cill through the wing; above the waistline of the car it seems solid, though the roof sports a couple of dents. The rear and front screen surrounds are good. The bootlid lip is shot.

Mechanically it will need work; looking down the inlets I can see valve stems with spots of rust, and there is a lot of fluffy aluminium oxide present on the head and carbs. Most metal components on suspension etc are covered in heavy surface rust.

I have compiled a list of panels I could put with it:

Second hand bootlid
Doors x 2
Door repair panels x 2 (the offside door frames appear solid)
Cills x 2
Inner cills x 2 (though much of them appear sound)
Reinforcers x 2
Second hand front wings x 2
Rear wing repairs x 2
Rear arch repairs x 2
Boot floor repairs x 2
Set of instruments
Set of alloys

If someone had the time and inclination, that would form the basis of a viable restoration in my opinion, but I have several other cars ahead of it in the queue. I have no long term storage space, and it is still on the trailer outside the house...

It is a 'series 1' car, chassis VA8***DLO

Putting those parts with the car would increase its cost to me to £1300. 'Values' of projects appear to be rising. Is it worth attempting to move it on on that basis, or should I just admit it is another one gone and break it?

Heart and head; opinions please...

Heart or head, this is rather worse than my Auto and everyone thought I was mad to take that on!

If it was a low number - or a press car - or even used for a brochure pic, then I might think twice before breaking it.

As it is, its nothing special and it's very far gone but will still yield a lot of useful parts - dibs on the grey interior!

Saj already has first dibs on the door cards!

Lee has dibs on the belts, but unfortunately they have fluffy edges!

Heart refuses to answer on basis that it would be branded heartless.

Head say's, if all spares to get up and running were present, sell complete with, as a resto project, options of with or without running gear may help.

It would be a shame to lose another one, may be inevitable.

To be real it's better not to be a car. This is a nice example that does has rust everywhere between all welded seams etc. After a sandblast you can take it home in a bag. Will cost a lot of money and effort and will never be a real deal. Save the parts.

I don't see that as viable. Except to donate its numbers and a few bits to a recreation.....

Probably best to take the good (?) bits off and wave goodbye.

I'm with the others. Too far gone. Save what bits you can.

That's the one I saw on the TR Reg website and made me post my SAD SPRINT item on the 6th May.

I'm not normally a glass half empty man when it comes to Sprints but I have to side with the majority and say it's too far gone to use good panels on.

Saying that I can see Alun restoring it for the hell of it just to prove us disbelievers wrong!!

Jeroen is right.

Save the interior for something deserving and genuine. (Not a toledo....)

This car is surely repairable.
If not, then what is the point of producing repair panels?

The first under bonnet photo suggests that this car has good inner wing reinforcers (no mud shields on early Sprints).
The photo with the front driver's door opened shows a solid A post angle.

Okay, so the engine, at the very least, needs removing and taking separate…….

£1300 seems more than reasonable to me.

At last! Apart from a couple of doors and a pair of s/h front wings, every panel on my list is from Club stock.

OK, I take Jeroen's comments about the rust in the welded seams, but much of these are in the inner arches. To me, this demonstrates that we need to investigate viable, well fitting, inner arch panels as a priority.

I intend to pull off a front wing and see how far I have to chase back to find solid metal. I may end up breaking it, but not yet a while.

Must remember to call Mr Wilkes this evening...

Thanks Jonners, I wasn't going to put it in a Toledo!
