Wheel Nuts

My little 1850 has been fitted with the fatter 7/16 wheel nut studs (so sprint type). Not a problem in my eyes as bigger is better, (in some ways) and I do have dolly sprint alloys on it. However one of the wheel nut studs has rounded off, meaning I had to remove the front wheel calliper disc and carefully cut/grind hammer shout curse and swear to get the nut off the wheel (previous owner fault am correcting) Right as far as I can see with Rimmers all I can buy is the smaller 3/8 studs. This is fine by me in time I'd like to change the lot to 3/8 so I can but the original steel wheels on if I so like. However with the 3/8 studs will the sprint wheels stay secure ok? What I mean is where the bigger nuts for the Sprint only, or will it be all fine with 3/8 and sprint alloys?

If you have 3/8 studs and 3/8 SPRINT nuts they will fit fine. The nut is the same on the sprints with 3/8 or 7/16 studs but obviously the 7/16 nut has a bigger hole/thread. Early sprints had 3/8 and later 7/16. The sleeve part of the nut is the same diameter

New genuine 7/16 studs are very definitely NLA - anywhere! So you are down to getting a pre owned one or finding a sustitute. MkI Escort studs are alleged to fit with a little modding on the rear face and several other possibilities exist. I can't vouch for any of them as, personally, I've never yet lost a 7/16 stud. If you do return to 3/8 studs, I would be pleased to buy the 15 remaining 7/16 studs for stock!

Ive used a few ford 7/16 in mine. The face where it meets the back of the hub needs machining to a 45 degree taper. The ford ones are about 2 threads shorter but nothing to worry about. If you have friendly machinist like I have its easy and cheap.

Not wanting to scupper a deal here but are you aware of how hard it is to get the rear hubs off and change the studs? I'd find a new (to you) 7/16 stud or just have one odd 3/8 one and nut for now to get you out of trouble....
Why would you go back to steel wheels? Alloys ride and grip better with 175/70's.

I know there a bit of a b**tard for the rears, but I have a workshop and a 20 tonne press that I can put the half shalfs if needs be
At the moment Rimmers are not selling 3/8 wheel nut, studs yes but not wheel nut... Anyone???

the steel wheels will fit with teh larger studs. And the larger studs are soooo much better in terms of safety. And the 3/8 sprint nuts are hard to find/expensive

Has anyone got a single larger stud and a single nut they would sell me? That's all I need to keep it with the larger type. Also does it matter what hub I use? You see it was the stud turning in the hub that caused the issues (previous owner fault)
One way or another ill get this dolly back on the road

I suspect that means a new hub then. The front ones are common to all dolomites and maybe even Spits as well but not certain of that. Anyway you could source a later Sprint hub with the right studs or just use your 3 good studs and one 3/8 one depending on what you find with just the one 3/8 nut.
Somebody will come up with something. Try a post on the f-b group too.

Basically yes, I've got a hub from rimmers with 3/8 studs in it. So if I knock them out and bash the other type in all will be fine?
So it's just a case of someone out there if you have a fatter stud I'd be interested

Its not a big deal. I've had both size studs breaks on me.....
At least if you have all the same nuts on one wheel you dont mix them up without really trying.
How bad is your old hub? Would a blob of weld or loctite do the job?

It's failed a weld before, so not worth doing again. I've got a new hub from rimmers and just ordered a stud from mark field jigsaw racing. Did think of doing what you said with one odd wheel nut on all of them but have that one with a locking wheel nut.

Pretty sure I have a wider stud in a drawer somewhere at work. Will look tomorrow.
