Some minor progress and another question for the experts..
I have stripped down the head and re-lapped in all the valves and now concentrating on the block and installing new rings.
Whilst removing the crank and marking the caps for orientation and number, I noticed that there is a little lateral movement of the big end on the crank.
Is there a value/max-min number there should be so I can measure?
This isnt crank thrust BTW, this is the left-right movement of the con rod and the big end on the crank journal.
Any advise or a measurement?
Also, the spare replacement engine that I have doesnt have a flywheel.
Is it simply a case of removing the flywheel from my old engine and re-fitting it to the new spare engine?
I realise it may be out of balance a bit, but are they keyed or can they go on in any orientation and/or should I be putting it on only one way?

Not sure about the conrod end float.
Re the flywheel there should be a scribe line which roughly joins up with a mark on the block for TDC.
Put the crank at TDC using the timing marks on the front pulley and fit the fly to the nearest matching holes. It probably wont line up exactly.

When I get the old engine out, I`ll check the marks and try to get the flywheel to line up as best as I can. Its not ideal as I would have thought that the flywheel, crank and perhaps the front pulley would be balanced together, but I`ll have to make do.
As for the clearance between the big end and crank, I have ~0.2mm at most, so nothing that overly concerns me (as Im sure there would need to be some clearance between them and also for oil to flow) but its nice to have a figure to work from.
Ah well..onwards!.
Honing the bores next and re-fitting the pistons.

I had mine balanced together....the big 3 pulley crank and flywheel...
Might be worth getting a Saab lighter clutch cover and getting it all done together if you have a good local shop.

I'll research the Saab clutch over here. Whilst they were sold here, Im not sure in what numbers. Anything that has to come from the UK either costs a small fortune in shipping, or I find a friendly relative/mate who doesnt mind carrying half of the car parts dept in their suitcase.
