Hi guys, I'm having problems with my 4 speed box, lazy 2nd gear syncro (double de-clutching required) , jumping out of 4th etc.
As I'm currently using her as a daily driver I'm looking for a replacement box. I have a 'wanted advert' up with my contact details in-case anyone has a good spare. However does anyone know if the spitfire 1500 4 speed box is the same fitment / gear ratio ??

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

As far as I'm aware, the gearbox is the same as the Spitfire 1500. With your's being a 1500HL, I assume your gearbox is the single rail type which is what the Spit 1500 also has. The 2nd gear synchro does tend to wear hence your first problem. Have you considered having your gearbox rebuilt? It might be your only option if you're unable to source a replacement.

Your box is common to all ohv engined dolomites and spit 1500's build after 75.

Best to keep the slave cylinder and mounting with the box it came with. There are variations that make declutching an issue if these are
swapped about.

Also used in the midget 1500 too...

Speedo drive pinion is the only difference so if you get a box from a 1300 dolly use your speedo drive.

thanks for the info, I was considering re-building the box, parts come in at around £150 , while there are spit boxes cheaper and if it was a straight swap i'll be off the road less time.

Another source of suitable gearboxes is the MG Midget 1500. The Welsh MG Centre in Wrexham are very good for S/H stuff.
