One of our members who has driven all the way from Inverness to our annual rally in Calne, Wiltshire urgently needs some rear wheel bearings for his Dolomite 1500. He's nursed the car as far as Calne but is doubtful that the car will make it home after the event. Can anyone in the area supply him with a set of wheel bearings before Sunday? Any offers of help will be very gratefully received. IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE AND WE'LL PUT YOU IN TOUCH WITH THE MEMBER. Thank you!

Hi, I am willing to help as I live about 25 miles from Calne - but I do not have any wheel bearings to offer. I can however be a gofer if we can locate some locally - this may however be a problem as most of the factors in the area shut @ mid day and when you mention anything classic their eyes glaze over. The use of tools and facilities at my home is available if the car can get here and it cant be fixed where it is.

I have a new rear axle bearing which I could deliver tomorrow as I live in Bristol or bring on Sunday.
It can be very difficult to get the old bearing off the half shaft.
My telephone number is o117 9571190

Many thanks to everyone who has replied, I've passed your messages on to Jim. Fingers crossed that he'll get sorted out! It will be a long journey home on the back of an AA truck otherwise...

If the bearing is disintegrating I think the easiest way out of this is a replacement 1300 / 1500 / 1850 rear half shaft with a good outer bearing. I think it would be a case of removing the brake-pipe, the back plate and handbrake lever then the retaining plate and pulling out the shaft. Slide in a new one and re-assembly is the reverse. Bleed the brakes. It would need rear seals replacement. Check the diff; oil level.
If I can't find a half-shaft; can anyone else help ?
It isn't something more serious like a diff; breaking up is it ?
Tony.

Just to say that in terms of classic spares Somerford Mini Limited is located nearby at Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, 9 Harris Rd, Calne SN11 9PT tel 01249 721421. Their website says they are open 9-2pm tomorrow (Sat).

Something to bear in mind is that Rarebits are Herald specialists but they're still worth a try.

The problems I have had in the past were getting the hub off the half shaft and then getting the bearing off when the half shaft is out.
