<sigh> the engine that keeps on 'giving'

So..yet again the car bites back.

Reconditioned engine in, everything fitted, coolant in and I find that the core plug closest to #1 on the exhaust manifold side is leaking from around the edge of the plug.

Its VERY annoying as the core plugs all look new, so the person who had rebuilt this head before me did a half a$$ed job and either was using a stop leak product or didnt fit the plug properly.
None of the others are leaking, just this one.

Has anyone replaced one of these in-situ before as its the one thats 'accessible'?

The others are all pretty close to brand new, so no need to replace the set.

Appreciate any advise....again

Andrew

Okay..

Is this an 1850?

For an 1850,
I haven't had to do this myself but would imagine it is possible to replace the offending core plug if the exhaust manifold is removed first.

Hi Ian,

Unfortunately not..its a sprint engine.

A Sprint engine.

I think that this may be viable, even if it is something of a scutter.
If the exhaust manifold can be removed you'll be in business….

Firstly disconnect the battery, then the exhaust manifold,
the radiator will need to disconnected (you will need to drain the coolant out whatever)
and the engine mounts and steady bar undone.
It will then be possible to raise the engine (trolley jack under the sump) for access.

Good luck with this.

I'm sure there was a more recent post with more detail but I can't seem to find it.

Thanks lads.

I'll go through the motions of removing it if I have to at the weekend.

Any idea if the sprint head plugs are the convex type that you whack in the centre to seal?
Wondering if I may be able to nip it tight by giving it a whack in the middle.

Sprint manifold can be removed in situ, but you need to undo the engine mount and lift that side of the engine. Some of the bolts come free from the head but then have to be removed with the manifold due to being too long to extract from it prior - when refitting, you need to remember which these are!

Lifting that side of the engine may give better access to the core plug also.
