I am a great fan of Hammerite rust remover dip, I find it particularly works well with cooling system parts.

It is diluted by 9 to 1 so could it be added to the cooling system to clean it out?

A bottle would most likely do it. Not sure what it would do to the rubber etc. but it does not seem to have any effect on the O rings.

Had this idea with kurust a while ago. Never brave enough to try..

assuming it is phosphoric acid (I bought a 5L tub of 80% stuff for £25. That is about 5x stronger than the stuff sold as rust cures too, so very good value. Descales a kettle pdq as well!) it should do no harm to rubber/plastics etc. Needs some thought about brass/copper/solder/ali, but I would see no issue as it is a pretty weak acid.
Best bet is to pop it in a bare engine for a week, should make it uber-clean inside.

But in a car that is in use, I would give it all a good flush, pop some in and drive the car. Every 10 degree temp rise roughly double how fast any reaction happens, so use he car, get it to 80 degrees, and it will work about sixty times quicker than if just left cold. So just an hour or two should do the business. Then re-flush, and fill with your chosen antifreeze.
