1850 hi torque starter motors

With so many to choose from power lite wosp etc can anyone recommend me with a decent hi torque starter motor for my 1850 dolly?

Jeroen had a recommendation, I think it was some sort of Bosch. Wasn't cheap though........

I've had one of these on my 1850 for the past 4 years.

It looks like there are 2 variants now, Not sure which one is the 1850 one.
You need to move the cable loom furthur back on the subframe and you lose the ballast resistor switching capability so its a 12V ignition coil you have to use.
No problem.

In the time that i did drive 50.000km a year with my dolomites these rimmer ones did fail. I had three within a year and then started using Bosch ones and those don't fail.

The problem is the Denso starters are very good but then they make them fit for a dolomite and then some chinese rebuild kit is used to overhaul and voilá, its not a Denso anymore......

In it's original form they last 500.000km on a Toyota.

Two times the tiny wire of the coil what is fitted on the inside of the plastic connector piece did break and when fitting the third i did open it up first and put some plastic repair around it hoping all was more rigid but after a while it didn't function anymore and i wasted it without further investigation.

But only using your dolomite occasionally and driving 3000km a year these will do fine i guess but mine were/are daily cars so must start when they have to.

So what about wosp ones are they any good? And have you any info in the Bosch ones?

I have got a Powerlite RAC406 on my car and it works well. Bought it cheap(er) when there was a sale. Very pleased with it.

The bosch ones are a special made. A friend of mine did work at a starter/alternator supplier/repair shop. The body is a 1,7kw starter and uses the three lug sprint fitment. Only have to drill out the holes slightly but spacing is exactly the same. He changes the gear for one that's suitable for the dolomite ringgear. It is not an off the shelf product and at that time iirc around 200 euro's.

But that was many years ago and never had to have new ones because they still all work as they should. Tahiti Sprint here in NL uses the same and that was the last one what was made i think 5 years ago.

This starter is about 30% of the original weight and 1,7kw compared to the 0,7kw original Lucas one. And genuine Bosch and not an Bosch overhauled with Chinese parts.

Powerlite and Wosp starters do look pretty much the same, is there any difference between them?

Following up with this post I got a WOSP starter motor to replace my failing original starter
