I currently have some rubber engine mounts mounts for sale on Ebay.

I had a question from a prospective purchaser who asked if they were NOS as he had heard that the re-manufactured one were too hard, I was thinking about what problem/s this may cause.

Malcolm, over the last five years I've installed a couple of sets purchased new from different major UK suppliers and had no issues with them at all. They certainly are not 'too hard'. As we all know prolonged exposure to oil will 'soften' rubber and I wonder if the comment about some new ones being 'too hard' comes from someone who has replaced a very old, very soft pair of mounts and was commenting on the difference.

I always recommend replacing the third engine mount (back of the gearbox) at the same time to avoid strange movements with the front tight and the rear loose. Then as long as the basics are correct - such as a smooth tickover - I can't see that there will be much problem as they are only really there to isolate engine vibration from the body, but at the same time avoiding too much torque twist when letting out the clutch.

Some years ago I bought a pair of new engine mounts for my vitesse, as the genuine originals had sagged a little.
After fitting I could feel a strange vibration through the car, and put it down to the new mounts (after checking no touching etc of engine to chassis etc)
Fitted a decent secondhand pair, all fine.

The new mounts were VERY hard, not sold as "uprated" or suchlike. And obviously too hard.

But things seem to be better at the moment with some suppliers.

(however, I have used OEM jag e type mounts. Noe £16 each, but genuine stuff and rather good)

In my experience, and what an experience that was, when they're too hard, it can be near fatal...read on....

If I ever do it again, I'll modify the brkts and fit the Range rover ones!
