What's caused this oily mess

As some of you may know, I have just acquired an 1850HL that has not driven for 24 years. I haven't had time to get to work on it yet, (and it's a bit nippy in the garage too
) but was peering in at the engine and noticed this oily mess on top of the block, visible between the inlet tracts. Any suggestions as to where it might have come from? There doesn't seem to be any obvious source at a first glance.

I think that's known as the original rust-proofing system from BL.
Maybe someone else can give a proper answer.

It works too! Considering its age and the reputation BL cars have for dissolving, this one is amazingly sound.......well, it seems to be. Who knows what lurks beneath------

I suspect its actually coolant from either leaky bypass tube or more likely spills from a thermostat change or just filling it up.
Clean thoroughly and detect when running. Most in use slants have a bit of muck in that area.

A good clean is in order to locate the source. I use a (cheap, ie not massive powered) jetwash on a fan spray, then some detergent (washing powder mixed stongly with hot water, then brushed on is excellent) the wash off. Then take for a drive and see what happens.
but I doubt it is anything too serious.
