Good morning all
The internal speedo drive on my auto sprint is spinning on the shaft,So speedo isn't working
I have spare auto box(thanks Alun)that I can strip for the speedo drive
Now my questions are
What type of bolts are on the back of the Borg warner 65 box?they look like a torx type of bolt
Can I do this job with the box in still in the car?
Would it be worth just getting the box out and having it rebuilt though it works fine?
Thanks
Gary

you can remove the extension housing with the box in the car as I have carried out this job when checking the Governor on my auto box. you will need to support the box as the gearbox mount needs to be removed. the bolts are like double hex heads, can't remember what they are called.
You would only need to remove the extension housing if the gear on the shaft had stripped.
if it is the gear the speedo cable fits into, then you should be able to remove this part without removing the extension housing.
once the clamp for the speedo cable has been removed you should be able to prise it out with two thin blade screw drivers.
It has an O ring on it so it makes it tight fit as it were. , when replacing you may have to gently feel the drive back in so that it meshes with the other gear on the output shaft.
The speedo drives are different colours, green for 1850 and red for sprint.
The last quote I had for rebuilding a box was £800, is the oil a good colour? if it changes well I may be tempted to leave it alone.
I have re-built an auto box, interesting and learnt a few things too.
hope this helps

The normal cause of the speedo drive gear spinning on the shaft is the rear flange bolt loose.
