1850 Compression....

Evening...
trying to track down the cause of poor starting on my 1850.
Got compression figures of 150, 150, 135, and 150 done cold.
Sounds fairly ok or not?
Cheers!

The BL workshop manual states that the compressions should be with 10psi of each other at normal operating temperature. The general rule of thumb is 10% of each other so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Malc, Matt does indeed have Strombergs being a very early 1850 on a K registration.

Doesn't sound too bad. Can you do a comparative measurement when hot, wide open throttle etc; etc; please.
And then put a small quantity of oil in each cylinder to help seal the piston rings and do another measurement.
Then watch out for the smoke when you next start it !
If you get the same results it might be the start of a valve burning etc;
Tony.

Poor starting in an 1850 dolly means you look at the ballast bypass system and the connections at the starter.
On an older 1850 the resistor is a separate component and I think the coil's location on the inlet manifold isn't really
the best place for it from a heat and vibration point of view... I've moved mine to the bulkhead as on later models.

Then with bergs do you have that early type with the temperature compensator on the side? They can leak giving you weak
mixture and were dropped on later berg'ed cars.

Also look at the diaphrams.

I think the compression numbers are ok and it should still start easilly enough all else being well....
