just started striping my sprint,think i may have some rust in the front chassis legs,when looking at the front of the car where it meets the chassis legs are you meant to be able to see inside the chassis leg,also the two inner headlights are they meant to be pop rivited

It would be easier with photos but if I have understood your question correctly the front of the forward chassis legs should be covered by the inner front valance. It is however in a prime rust area and if it rusts away it will leave the end of the chassis leg open leaving a good view of the front subframe mounting tube inside the chassis leg. Is this the area you are asking about?

The club has repair sections for the front end of these legs. Also for the ends of the inner valance, though these do not extend to cover all of the chassis leg end.

thanks,yes that's the area where mine has rusted,there's not a lot of room to get in there,are you meant to take other bits of first

I expect your chassis leg end looks a bit like this? You will see that I have cut off the lower section of the outer valance to improve access, and I will have to weld this back on later.


And this is a later pic after I have removed the headlight panels. The red outline is roughly the shape of the club's inner valance repair panel. It will not be difficult to extend the repair to add another small panel to fully cover the chassis leg opening.

thanks a lot,a picture paints a thousand words so it not uncommon for them to rust in that area,one other area i seem to have rust is round the top of the headlights,i think they have another panel that sit in there ,think its called an eyebrow section,were they made in steel or cardboard,would you have a picture of one so i can see what they are meant to look like

The eyebrow is steel and is a very rare part to find NOS. I was fortunate enough to find a pair a few months ago (after a couple of YEARS searching) and, since I only needed one, sold the other to a very grateful James Sheppard for his concours project. Rimmers do a very poor and ill fitting copy for something like £117 a side IIRC and the club do a GRP copy for considerably less but fitting it to a steel car can be problematic.
So no perfect solution to this one unfortunately.

Dave,

You can see the end of the eyebrow in the letterbox which I have cut in the top of the outer valance - see my second pic. The eyebrow has in fact largely rusted away in that area but it seems quite solid beyond the letterbox area. It wraps around the headlight and its main function is to tie the front of the wing in to the valance ends. It seems to be still fulfilling that purpose on mine so I will just tidy up the frilly edges, fire in some rust remedy, weld a patch in the letterbox opening and apply plenty of waxoyl (or similar) into the valance cavities. There is still plenty of access to that area after everything is welded back up (which is of course why it rusts in the first place).

My outer wings are generally in good shape, but I do have other areas of rust on the inner wings around the bottom of the suspension turrets. This is not surprising as the inside of the turret is another road crud trap. Does anyone know of any shields or similar (wheel arch liners?) to help close off this area from road debris?

And I know how you feel about the dents in your panels. It looks like someone has dropped a plough on one of my rear wings. But I know that when I am ready to deal with that, my car will be just about back on the road!
