Electronic indicator units ...

#1 Post by MIG Wielder »

My indicators died last week and it was the original Lucas 8FL unit that had failed. I went along to the local motor factors and after getting the "sharp intake of breath and sucking of teeth noise" they actually produced one of the 2-pin after market electronic units. And it works fine. Nice constant flashing rate.
2 problems: No indication of bulb failure. See below.
No audible click when operating.
I can probably live with the first one, but I do like the 1970's click-click sound. It occurred to me I could use a big 12V power relay screwed to a metal panel to do the click, but how is it done on a modern please ? I did like the click-click sound in the Citroen I hired recently for instance. It had an echo to it .
Thanks, Tony.
Edit > 10/4/17 : The nearside indicator bulb failed this morning and what happens is the indicator unit works at twice the rate to indicate a problem. Full marks to the designer. I have connected a Maplin piezo- sounder across the indicator electronic unit and that produces a great " modern style " indicator sound. Sorted !

Dunno how it's done but my Mazda had a software option to control the volume!

Car Builder Supplies do an Indicator Warning Buzzer for the princely sum of £7.20 (part no. INDBUZ).

I am thinking it is necessary for there to be an audible warning on all cars with Type Approval or an IVA?

Tony, I fitted a modern LED-ready relay to mine. I think it was documented in my resto thread. It was only a few quid on eBay and had an extra earth terminal. It was literally fit-and-forget.

It's only necessary to have an audible warning if your car doesn't have tell-tale repeater lights on the dash. But I have bought several electronic flasher units for my own and customers cars on ebay that DO click, they weren't expensive either, about £6 each. If I knew how, i'd do a link!

The normal modern 3 pin will work and klik (click). Just the extra one pin has to be earthed.

When not in a hurry from china they are 0,90 gbp incl. p&p. If you like someone elso to buy them for you in china they are about 5-6 gbp.
