Possibly not without destroying the locking cap. I'd be inclined to take the filler pipe out of the car through the filler hole and drill the lock out as a first step.

Thanks for the ideas,but on a sprint filler neck theres a breather pipe coming out the side this stops you from pulling the filler pipe out of the car

I can supply you with a second hand filler pipe if you find yourself having to destroy the one you have...

I have second hand locking caps too...(with keys )

If it's not been off for a long time. the tumblers may just be stuck so try some WD40 in the barrel and a good wiggle of the key first. If it still wont play, run a drill down the barrel, and get another cap from Alun!

We had exactly this issue on the RBRR in 2014. Pulled up somewhere in the middle of the night, about 20 Triumphs filling up or waiting. And only 800 miles to go.

Key just would not open the cap. However, a flat bladed hammer through screwdriver, a hammer and a pair of molegrips had the cap off in under 30 seconds...... The lock barrel is not at all strong and will snap if you apply a moderate turning force. The cap continued to be used, but never locked again!

On a loosely related subject does anyone know where to get chrome locking caps from? Mine actually works perfectly except the spring loaded lock cover failed in the pivot/spring dept and seems totally inaccessible to repair, even assuming that's possible

Just had a thought regarding locking petrol filler caps. Does much fuel gets siphoned out of cars these days - don't the tealeaves just unbolt the bits they want off moderns such as bumpers, door mirrors etc. and make off with them in the night?
How about a nice little sign than could be stuck inside the NSR quarterlight with text such as:
'the fuel inside this vehicle has been treated with a lead replacement additive and is extremely damaging to the components in modern automotive systems'
Perhaps a BMIHT logo could be added as well to give it some official looking clout!

I must admit, i'm not sure of the usefulness of a locking cap these days and don't have one on the Carledo. I'm yet to lose any fuel in a driveable car to theft. Most modern cars make it well nigh impossible to siphon fuel, thieves know this, so no longer approach the cap as a target. I HAVE had gas nicked from cars stored in my yard on 2 occasions both times they were scrappers anyway, which is just as well since the oiks nicked the fuel by punching a hole in the bottom of the tank! The poor sods must have been really desperate to want a couple of gallons of old stale petrol! And I like to think they got their comeuppance cos they also took a 5 gallon drum of "fuel" that was sat outside the workshop door. This was mixed petrol and diesel that I had drained from a customers car (who had put the wrong fuel in) and kept around as it makes excellent cleaning fluid for oily parts. Don't suppose their car ran very well on it though!

I spent ages trying to work out why my Spitfire was only getting 12MPG. The problem went away after fitting a locking cap..

Then again I recently lost an entire tank (£60!) out of the Sprint as the cretins has just undid the flexible line at the rear!

Must be a London thing..
