Why would you need spacers in a taper roller bearing that adjusts?

Steve

They lock the inner racers solid on to shaft, and stop them rotating and wearing the shafts

Seems like a cure for a non existent problem! I've never had trouble here on any Triumph and if I did, I would replace the worn stub axle that was causing it, not use a work-around!

Agreed. A little smear of loctite would work as a bodge too I'd have thought...

Or even judicious use of a centre punch!

Ah ! Front wheel bearings with a machined spacer and shims is the way the end-float is adjusted on the MGB.
The idea is that the spacer is a close fit over the stub axle and its outer diameter has to match the diameter of the bearing's inner races. Shims of 3, 5 and 10 thou are then added to get 2 to 4 thou end float.
All in all its a lot more fiddly that the Dolomite ones but they do seem to last forever before needing replacement.
Tony.
