Welcome to the forum.

Which model of car have you got?
There are several gearboxes used.

Ian.

PS I have moved this to "Dolomite Related" as this is a more used section of the forum.

The Sprint gear lever is secured with a sprung bayonet cap that is then secured with a bolt. I have seen cases where the bolt missing can cause the bayonet cap to undo itself; I have also seen cars reassembled without the spring beneath the cap, both of which can cause a lose stick, or even the end of it to jump out of the remote box. The end of the stick has a small blind hole that receives a sprung plunger; this is more often than not missing as it is a right bugger to install correctly, but that itself causes minimal slop.

Correctly assembled, the Sprint stick should be tight and fairly precise; I suggest you lift the coin tray and rubber gaitor and see what is amiss. I've had some very high mileage cars but never found one with an unduly worn stick or selector rods in the remote box.

Neil, my apologies; welcome, I didn't notice this was your first post!

Is the car a recent acquisition?
