1850 Diff Pinion Seal

The front oil seal on the diff of my 1977 1850HL is leaking. I removed the propshaft and see that there is a metal cover over the nut. What is the best way to remove this? I guess it is destroyed in the removal process, so I have ordered a new one with the seal. I know about the crush spacer and will be dot marking the nut before I remove it!

If it's like the one on the Spitfire it's possible to wheedle it out with a large flat screwdriver and some gentle hammer taps without mangling it completely.

Its always worth checking if the breather on the diff is free of debris while youre under there too. If you unscrew it and it makes a woosh noise it could be pressurising slightly which wont help the seal

As already stated you should be able to get the cover off with a few gentle taps but you may find that the nut is not that easy to get off. On one of my cars I ended up using the weight of the car to get it off.

And whatever you do don't over-tighten re-fitting the nut and end up having to put a new crush spacer in! My shoulders are still aching from the torque required to squash the one on the Spitfire diff!
