As my electric fuel pump failed just after arriving at NEC last Thursday, I plan to remove it and go back to a mechanical one. Is it possible to fit any of the Dolomite pumps or do they all differ? I know about the spacers and arm lengths but didn't know if a 1500 or 1850 one would fit as I think I have these somewhere but cannot lay my hands on them at the minute.

The 1850 and Sprint share a fuel pump, as do the 1300/1500 engines, but the two have different part numbers and I'm therefore assuming are not cross compatible.

What type of electric pump is it Rich?

It's a Facet copy I think Tony. It ticks when priming which as far as I know it should do but also ticks pretty loud when driving and varies between quiet and loud when running not necessarily when increasing speed either. Mounted on Bulk head under heater blower. Ebay seem to sell them for as little as £11 so presuming it's one of these that has been fitted. Original pump is still in situ but was tested by David on Thursday on arrival at show and seems to be knackered which is why PO says he fitted the electric one. Are you running an electric one Tony?

The proper facets are pretty good. Might still be worth getting a decent pump, even one of those little square ones. Mine has electric but its an in tank pump (modded tank) with OEM VW pump in there.

Most of the electric pumps are "pushers" rather than "pullers", so really need to be below the fuel tank and as close as possible. The other issue is most produce too high a pressure...
Facet do a "posiflow" and at a low pressure, which may be a good choice. Huco also make excellent electric pumps.....

Tony, I presume you have EFI? I use a VW golf pump in my spitfire, seems a very good pump especially as it has a decent built-in swirl pot, and you can run the tank almost dry with no starvation issues.

Not yet but I fitted the in tank set up in readiness. Im using a VW low pressure lift pump that moves fuel from one side of the tank to the other (in the vw) and then regulate before the carbs. When the efi set up is ready, I can just swap the pumps for high pressure

£30-£40 and are low pressure..would you try one of those first? As i said mine is mounted under heater box on bulkhead, does the position make much of a difference to the performance?

Yes as mentioned previously, pumps are not good at sucking a long way so if it was under the car it would be better nearer the tank. Harder for the wiring job which is prob why it ended up in the engine bay

The Ebay description for your pump does say that it is intended to be fitted near the tank.

I've got a morris minor pump mounted in the engine bay, has worked well for the last 8 years

The Morris Minor pump is the exception to the rule since it was mounted under the bonnet in OE application. Nearly all other SU pumps were rear mounted (Stag, Jag, MGB, mini, 1100, Riley/Wolseley 1.5 to name but a few) and the original position should be duplicated if using such a pump as they were designed that way. With aftermarket pumps such as the OP has, its harder to tell where to mount it, half way along the floor sounds like a good idea (maybe in the cavity under the drivers seat/inner sill area)
