Seat Foams

The seats on my 1850 look great in black cord, but when you sit on them this fine yellow dust comes through the fabric, so I guess the foams are disintegrating. Does anyone manufacture new foams? What can I do to solve this issue?

I don't know if anyone makes one ATM, but I will be taking a good pattern and a tired seat to Cliff the trimmer in the next couple of weeks so he can make a prototype for just this problem! Since the front seat cushions are not handed, this may be a viable remanufacture project! Watch this space!

any car upholstery company will be able to cut and shape the foam.

Re-foaming is quite common, any of the good upholstery firms should be able to do that for you.

I wasn't aware of any car upholsterers near my home, but have just located one about 30 miles away. I'll give them a call next week.

My go-to guy, Cliff, an old mate, (with occasional bit parts in Car SOS etc) is currently prototyping moulded cushion foams that won't degrade or lose shape with age, when I was over there a couple of weeks ago he showed me a couple of prototypes for 1500 Spitfire he's just done, (which ARE handed) and jolly good they look too! Sure anyone with an ounce of nouse can hack a chunk of foam into shape to do the job, these are a bit more sophisticated than that, but once the die is cast (geddit?) they are fairly cheap to produce as the die can be re-used over and over.

I've seen Cliff at work on Car SOS. Superb craftmanship.

Hi guys
Any update on seat foams. I've recarpeted my car and noticed the constant flow of dried up foam bits and dust falling on to my new carpets! Does anyone have a template or link to someone making them? If not, is it just a case of stripping down and cutting foam to fit?

Progress is being made, but has been delayed a little by Covid (and a little more by huge workload pressures) In the meantime Cliff has made me a 1 off foam, to the pattern we provided months ago, for a job that couldn't wait! And very nice and comfy it is too! So he would be able to make more pending the arrival of the moulded ones.
I can supply his phone munber by PM to anyone who is also in a big hurry!

Having taken my seats apart a few times it appears the squib foam on the rear of the seat material itself is disintegrating and causing the orange dust.... The main foams are now also starting to go.. Does anyone know if the squib foam can be replaced on the rear of the seat fabric without unstitching the seat covers?
