DTR is presented in Pure White (paint code 19) with a black interior has just received a sympathetic restoration after being in dry storage for 28 years. The car has had one previous owner and benefited from being Ziebarted with the receipt still included in the paperwork. The mileage is a genuine 90,820 backed up by previous MOT Certificates.
Details of the restoration can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=32879
This is what I would call a first generation car built in the first half of 1972 featuring the larger leather rimmed steering wheel common with the MK1 Stags, early dials and centre interior light. The interior is original with a dealer fit option of a Philips FM radio. The wood is all in good condition with only some minor flaking to the lacquer on the passenger door capping. It still has its original undamaged headlining; new seatbelts have been fitted plus rears for safety.
The engine bay is pristine having had the Ziebart removed. Normally a high mileage like this would be a problem, however this DTR has had a complete engine and gearbox rebuild just under 800 miles ago using all original equipment parts. The rebuild included a rebore, block deck including the timing cover to ensure that the head sits flush, bottom end balance and a crankshaft polish. Brand new weight matched Hepolite pistons have been fitted and the rods balanced. It has then been reassembled using new OE bearings, new core plugs and a new German timing chain and OE tensioner.
The original cylinder head has been completely overhauled with new valves, seats, guides and springs. It has been faced, not skimmed, to allow for any future maintenance. Valve clearances have been set and a new camshaft has been fitted and run in correctly. It has been fitted to the block with new hardware including nickel plated studs to allow for the head to be removed in the future if needed.
The Stromberg CDSE carburettors have been completely rebuilt with new updated diaphragms which are less prone to pin holing, new jets, needles and gaskets have also been fitted. A new fuel pump has been fitted with an inline filter sitting under the car to maintain the original look of the engine bay. The fuel tank has been cleaned out and brand new fuel lines and ethanol safe rubber hoses fitted. A new manifold has been fitted with new hardware as well as a complete new stainless steel exhaust system.
The water pump has been upgraded to a Stag item exceeding OE spec and includes a new brass cage and ceramic bush to give years of leak free driving. The radiator has been upgraded for a Dolomite Sprint radiator and a high power Revotec electric fan fitted with override switch so even in 35 degree ambient temperatures this car will not overheat.
It should have a three rail overdrive gearbox, however the previous owner swapped this out for a new single rail overdrive box when the old one started playing up. This was quite common at the time with the single rail box considered superior to the three rail. The gearbox has been completely rebuilt with new bearings, synchro’s and layshaft. The overdrive has had its filters cleaned and works as it should, the overdrive wiring and reverse light switch have been replaced to eliminate any electrical problems in the future. The clutch and hydraulics are all new and running on silicone fluid.
The distributor has been overhauled with a new bushes and vacuum advance and now features Lumenition Optronic electronic ignition matched to a quality coil and Magnecor leads. The electronic ignition has been fused to protect the control box, and the coil moved from the engine to the bulkhead as per later models to protect it from heat and vibration. The main wiring loom has been stripped, checked repaired and modified to include relays for the halogen headlamps that have now been fitted to replace the sealed beam units which are now getting scarce.
The braking system has been completely overhauled with new Copper Nickel brake lines, new rear cylinders, springs and hardware, the drums have been skimmed. It has new front discs, calipers and Mintex pads. All flexi hoses have been replaced as has the master cylinder. The system now runs on silicone fluid.
The rear axle has been rebuilt with new bearings and gaskets, normally difficult to do without a press and special puller; the rear suspension bushes have been replaced.
The steering rack has been refurbished and new bushes fitted along with new subframe bushes, a new polybush steering column support bush is fitted along with a refurbished flexi joint.
The body had has the usual repairs to the front end, these have been done correctly and rust protected for the future. The eyebrows are club fibreglass items to eliminate a rust spot. The sills are original and the door bottoms are original and intact. A typical problem area on these cars is on the bulkhead where the throttle pedal mounts. This has been repaired properly and reinforced using a club supplied reinforcing plate.
The paintwork looks good for its age and comes up to a nice shine; the front had been touched in where the repairs have been carried out. A new windscreen seal has been fitted to the original Triplex Zebrazone screen, the heated rear window works correctly as well. New convex wing mirrors have been fitted. In the boot the original mat and boot boards are still intact, and the original Goodyear G800 spare tyre is under the boot floor, four brand new Uniroyal rain expert tyres have been fitted and the wheels aligned.
The car is original and not a show queen, so expect some dings and dents from over 40 years of use as a family car. To make this a show car would require very little effort indeed.
The car has just covered just under 800 miles on its new engine so has just had a first service to replace the filter and Millers running in oil with good quality Millers 20W/50.
Although it is Tax and MOT exempt the car will be supplied with a full years MOT for peace of mind plus two sets of keys and a full tank of Shell V Power. The original seatbelts, the original dealer supplied number plates, engine fan and pulley will also be supplied to allow the owner to return the car to original condition if required. If the new owner is not a member they will receive one year’s membership to the club allowing them to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and expertise and parts supply that we have to offer.
