4 speed auto on a dolly??

A question that has come up, and probably hypothetical...
There is a ZF 4 speed auto conversion for the stag. But would it fit an 1850/sprint engine? Came about as the stag and sprint gearboxes use the same gearbox casing and both use an adaptor ring. So some commonality that should be possible to utilise?

And if it fits would the gearbox work correctly, or is it set up for a much torquier engine?

Space not such an issue....

AFAIK the Stag conversion uses the Stag BW35 bellhousing to mate the ZF box to the engine, and as the BW35 wasn't available on the Dolomite it would make that part of the convesion a bit more tricky but it may be possible to source a ZF bellhousing that would fit to a modified engine bearer plate so I'd be surprised if it couldn't be done.

I'm in the middle of carring out the convention on a Stag,I've still got to work out the inhibitor switch and reversing lights

So an adaptor plate could work.
But how about the torque (or comparative lack of) with the dolly engine? That may be a more difficult issue.

There are plenty of cars that were fitted with the ZF box, so look for one that most closely matches the Dolomite specs.

if your able to get hold of a gearbox from an LDV (there like gold dust now) they would have a cable for the speedo, other wise like me have to go electronic

I've seen other ZF boxes without the speedo drive converted to take a cable, in fact I've sold the parts to do it.

If I recall correctly, Brian Kitley's Sherpa had a Sprint engine and ZF 'box....

So undoubtedly possible. Maybe a few hurdles but nothing a bit of engineering can't overcome.
All a thought exercise at the moment, and not for one of my cars...Enough said!
