2500TC into a 1500TC

Hi Folks
I have ended up with a rotten 1978 2500TC. As my 1975 1500TC bottom end is rumbling and the rear axle and gearbox are whining.
Anyone ever seen this swap done, I was going to swap the engine, gearbox and rear axle over and hope I can get a propshaft to fit!
Regards
Barry

There is a legend of one in a garage somewhere that never sees the light of day. Several folk claim to have seen it, but AFAIK there is not an underbonnet pic available.
Honestly, I don't think it's possible without BIVA inducing body mods, either going through the bulkhead or stretching the front chassis. The big 6 is just too long!
Besides that small point, why would you want to, when the world is full of much better engines? The 6 is very heavy, not massively powerful and suffers from exactly the same crank and thrust washer problems as the 1500 4 cyl you have now. Unsurprising as the 2 are closely related!

Hi Steve
Purely as I have one getting delivered this weekend for £200 and I did not know what to do with it.
As with all things, it looks so easy, but your probably right.
I will strip the 2500TC, it has leather seats in so if there ok I will swap them over and get rid of what I don't need.
Regards
Barry

Thinking logically(!)
gearbox is the same as a sprint, though no adaptor plate/ring. Engine about 50% longer though, so will that go in?
Axle, totally different as IRS. A sprint axle would be a better alternative and uses the same CWP as the 2.5 saloon.
Otherwise teh saloon is still a good buy. OD box worth more than £200, the diff is worth a few bob too, as is the engine.
Well.....

On this forum from a few years ago, there is a video of a 2000 engine being started in a small saloon.
It was in New Zealand.
It is too time consuming for me to be bothered searching......
There were no body modifications, the engine was early 2000 mark 2 with Strombergs.
You need a Sprint back axle. Propshaft will be Sprint with shortened front section.
Ian.

According to Ted's lore, the big six engine was destined for the Dolomite body at some point....though the more I learn from his step daughter about other aspects of Ted's conversation, the less attention I pay to the detail!
I did measure up back in the 1990s when I had both TR6 and Sprint and thought it would fit with adaptations to the subframe mounts.
From recent evidence, an overdrive 'box changes hands for a lot more than £200 these days, even without provenance!

Then the single rail O/D gearbox I bought sight unseen from an ebay seller two years ago for £220 was a good buy as it works perfectly! I'm not often that lucky. And Wins International gave me £20 for the non-O/D box - win-win as they say.

Average price for almost any O/D gearbox these days is around £375. I got almost that much from a well known gearbox rebuilder for a TR6 box with A type O/D which was completely without provenance and had been in a loft for 20 years! And that was 2 years ago at least! And another £250 for the completely unproven engine that went with it (admittedly a 150 horse CP unit) and all you could safely say about that was it turned over!

To bump an old thread ...
This has definitely been done - I have a TRIUMPH WORLD magazine from the 90's with this very conversion done to a magenta 1500. The engine fitted in no problem. He used a Metro radiator system for plumbing. The only issue was some minor chopping of the bulkhead to allow him to fit the original Triumph PI system - Gave him a 150BHP Dolly with a straight six (which I know is a mildy-modded Sprint) Unfortunately he stacked the car so it is no more - I can probably dig out the article if anyone wants it...

Hi
Thanks for the info, but sadly me and the sell could not agree on a price, So my 1500 will stay as is, for now!

Probably stacked it from terminal understeer, all that weight up front.......
