Horn earth and taking apart horn switch

#1 Post by cleverusername »

There is no power getting to my horn and I have two theories. The first is no earth, I can only fit one horn because of the oversized radiator I have squeezed in, I m wondering if the twin horn system has a common earth and I will have to remake the earth for my single horn. How is the horn earthed? Is it the big mounting bolt at the back which acts as earth?

The second is the contacts in the switch have fallen out. How do you get the end off the stalk to check the horn switch?

Thanks

The standard horns have 2 connections via the loom, earth and live from the switch.
The switch pulls off from the very end of the stalk.

Are you saying you don't have battery voltage at the horn? If not then you need to be looking upstream from the horn, not a bad earth. Fuse, broken wire, horn push etc.

The horn is wired so that the switch button is fed so there will be no feed evident at the horn unless the contact is made at the switch.

There is also no legal reqirement to have 2 horns fitted, my Toledo only came with one and still has only one. So long as it works and makes some sort of a tooting noise, rather than a strangled burp, that's adequate!

I found the problem, the live feed fuse had blown, however the horn doesn't sound in great nick. Even with a battery connected to it via jump leads it sounds like an asthmatic hamster. So I think a new horn is in order.

Some horn units have a trimming screw on them and just need adjustment
